New CARB Truck and Bus Regulation begins January 1st.


Starting in 2020, the California Department of Motor Vehicles begins compliance verification to ensure that vehicles subject to the California Air Resources Board's (CARB) Truck and Bus Regulation meet the requirements prior to obtaining a DMV registration.

On January 1, 2020, heavy-duty diesel vehicles that are not in compliance with the CARB Truck and Bus Regulation will be unable to register their vehicle with the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).  Diesel-powered trucks, buses and school buses with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) greater than 14,000 lbs. must reduce exhaust emissions by meeting particulate matter filter requirements and upgrading to a 2010 or newer engine model year.

SECTION 179 TAX INCENTIVE.

The Federal Government has Section 179 deductions that can be used to help offset the cost of CARB compliant trucks. Now through December 31, 2023 eligible business owners may write off up to $1,160,000 when purchasing or leasing new and used equipment.

Q: What are the CARB requirements I must meet to ensure that the DMV can register my vehicle?

A: Certain model years or older model years diesel vehicles with a GVWR of 26,000 pounds or less will be denied registration as of January 1. Heavier diesel vehicles over GVWR over 26,000 will also be denied.  Use the chart above to see current requirements for the current year and weight classes. Remember, the years in parentheses are the model years, and the ones above are the Engine Model Years.
