The Basics

For starters, a sleeper truck is a semi-truck with a cab behind the driver’s seat. This design accommodates living quarters outfitted with a cozy bed, lighting, and modern facilities like a mini-fridge, microwave, dining spaces, and plenty of storage space to keep you comfortable. Many models also have a flat-screen TV, and some even come with bathroom facilities and kitchenettes.

The History

In the 1920s, trucks came with sleeping berths placed between the driver cab and the engine. Though this design allowed one person to sleep while the other one was driving, it came with little to no space for the person sleeping to escape in the event of an accident.

This led to truck manufacturers modifying the design to create sleeper truck models that featured safer cabins. In 1953, the first overhead sleeper model was released with sizes ranging from 18- to 24-inches. However, to comply with the federal regulations mandate, this size was extended to 36- to 48-inches.
