The History of Hino Trucks
The Hino brand has been around for nearly 80 years. They are globally recognized as one of the largest truck manufacturers in the world! Although they have become one of the fastest growing truck manufacturers in the U.S. market, you may not know much about them. Our team at RWC Group has put together this brief history of Hino Trucks to help introduce you to their brand.
A Japanese Start
In the 1900s, Hino began introducing its vehicles to the Japanese market. In 1946, they began marketing heavy-duty trailer-type diesel engines and trucks, but later on in 1961, the Contessa 900, a passenger car, was introduced. They were able to create vehicles that appealed to both consumer and commercial markets!
Coming to the United States
1983 was a big year for Hino Motors Ltd. They held a ceremony to celebrate the first round of vehicle shipments to the United States. Their medium-duty diesel truck was being introduced to the U.S. market and would be available for sale the following year.
Although the high-profile start to Hino’s American success began in 1984, their American story began three years prior. During 1981 on the United States Air Force base in Yokota, Japan, families of U.S. Air Force personnel were able to experience the Hino brand for the first time. Two Hino buses were provided for them to use during sightseeing and long-distance tours. The U.S. military made note of the bus’ qualities, therefore leading to an opportunity for expansion to the States.
Market, Environment and Employment Footprint
Over the next several decades, Hino would become a staple in the trucking industry, especially their medium-duty models. More recently, in 2019, they outgrew one of their manufacturing plants and were able to bring nearly 500 jobs to a new location in West Virginia. With several other plants located throughout the U.S., you can find similar stories in many other areas. Hino has been able to provide quality trucks and new jobs, creating a positive footprint in the U.S.
Along with these positive impacts, in 2020 they also announced Project Z, the company’s path to creating zero emission vehicles. This announcement showcases their dedication to innovation and environmental efforts.
There is still much to learn about Hino Trucks and the great products they offer. If you’re curious to get to know their models better, our teams at RWC Group would be happy to introduce you! We have several locations throughout the Western United States, including Arizona, California, Alaska, and Washington.
